Analysis on the Surge Cause of Pipeline

The surge of pipeline is analyzed in this paper. It is pointed out that the external cause of pipeline's surge induces from the instantaneous closing of valve or the sudden shutdown of pumps the internal cause is that both pipeline and liquid are elastic, the pipeline is an elastic hydraulic system, the flowing liquid has kinetic energy and interia, which contributes to the pipeline's surge. In this paper, the theory of pipeline surge and the process of pipeline surge are introduced. The propagation speed of surge wave is related to the physical characteristics of liquid, the physical property and specification of pipe material, and pipe laying method. The author provides the differential equations of surge motion in this paper.
