Abstract
The paper analyzes in detail the reaction to earthquake of the aerial pipes in a pump station, and conducts a qualitative aseismic computation for the pipes. It is believed that strong earthquakes will cause no severe damage to the pipe itself, provided pipe material with high yield limit is selected and attention paid to improved welding quality, and that the predominant reason for the seismic damage to aerial pipes is the pipe supports which are no longer effective or have inadequate strength. The following aseismic precautions are given: ① Avoid to install any pipe in the area with seismic intensity higher than IX; ②Select pipe material reasonably through comprehensively considering its physical properties such as brittle transition temperature, yleld limit, rigidity, etc.; ③ Improve welding quality; ④ Use the pipe supports which have adequate strength and rigidity, keep them movable but prevent them from lateral sliding; ⑤ Reinforce the structures adjacent to the pipes to improve their aseismic ability.
