Abstract
The applications of fibreglass reinforced pipes are steadily on the increase in all the advanced industrial countries. U? S? produces fibreglass reinforced plastics with an annual growth rate of 10%; 25% of the large diameter water pipelines in Japan and 25% of the total length of pipelines in UK are fibreglass reinforced pipes. The industry of fibreglass reinforced plastics in China started late and has a slow progress in its application due to the doubt that this new material is more costly. To clear tliis mind of doubt, market study and economy analysis are made, and the equivalent cost under the same condition compared between fibreglass reinforced pipe and the corrosion protected carbon steel pipe? The comprehensive evaluation, supported by a project budget of a practical case and the data and information provided, concludes that fibreglass reinforced pipe is less costly and has a bet: er serviceability than carbon steel piie? This conclusion offers a strong evidence for the populization of fibreglass reinforced pipe in China.
