The Importance of vertical earthquake load in the design of liquid storage tank——on why the "elephant's foot" phenomenon results

In this paper the author gives an analysis and check of the tank damages suffered in the Tangshan earthquake, pointing out that "the elephant's foot" seen in storage tanks was mainly caused by vertical earthquake load, and meanwhile set forth some earthquake resistant methods.
