Setting of standard points for pipeline inspection based on viewshed analysis and its verification

  • To improve the effectiveness of standard points for GPS pipeline inspection, viewsheds of such points were analyzed, computed and expressed under 3D simulation environment along pipeline by combing the management requirements of pipeline inspection and using the viewshed analysis function of GIS, so as to provide reference for setting and adjusting the standard points for pipeline inspection. Application results show that this technique effectively makes up the deficiency of the mobile inspection system that may not accurately determine positions between the standard inspection points and the pipeline route. Accordingly, topographic reliefs or surface features may no longer present barriers for high-efficiency inspection. The technique can promote quality of pipeline inspections and also effectively reduce the management costs.
