Application and failure analysis of surge relief valve

Abstract
This paper reviews different models and features of extensively used surge relief valves and describes their classifications, structural configurations and applicable working conditions. With consideration to performances of surge relief valves on site, common failure types, circumstances and causes of surge relief valves installed in long-distance pipelines are studied. Furthermore, reasonable improvements in structural design and maintenance of such valves are proposed against causes for such failures. Relevant research results may provide practical and reliable guidance for selection, application and maintenance of surge relief valves for long-distance pipelines, so as to ensure the safe and reliable operations of oil pipelines through effectively prolonging service life and improve the performance of surge relief valves.
