Force characteristics and structure optimization of π-type pipes

  • In this paper, the fluid force on π-type pipes was investigated by means of theoretical analysis and ANSYS numerical simulation. And then, π-type pipes were structurally optimized from the view point of reducing fluid loads. Based on the study, the following conclusions are reached. First, the resultant force on π-type pipes from the inner fluid is generally small and can be ignored, but the resultant torque is usually very large and it is the direct reason for the large deformation of the pipes. Second, the resultant torque is only dependent on the length difference between two vertical parts of the π-type pipe, once the diameter, inlet pressure and flow rate of the pipes are set. Hence, the length difference between the two vertical parts is the key reason why the resultant torque of this type of pipes is not zero. And third, the fluid torque of π-type pipes can be minimized by arranging the pipes in a symmetrical pattern, so that large deformation induced by large fluid force can be avoided.
