Issues related to design of long-distance CO₂ pipeline

CO₂ pipelining will present different phases under different temperature and pressure of pipeline, which makes CO₂ pipelines quite different from oil and gas pipelines. From a CO₂ pipeline design point of view, this paper analyzes relevant techniques of CO₂ pipeline system, including physical properties and phase of CO₂ flow, pipeline hydraulic and thermal calculations, process system of the stations and the equipment selected, and so on. It is concluded from this study that phase control is an important part of the design of CO₂ pipelines; the process system of pump stations for CO₂ pipeline should incorporate dehydration process according to the water content of CO₂, and the dehydration process and CO₂ compression process should be combined to form a system; the transportation devices of CO₂ pipeline, such as compressors, delivery pumps, dehydration units and venting systems, have its particularities, and should be selected and designed according to the characteristics of CO₂ pipelines. The conclusions can provide a reference for the design and construction of long-distance CO₂ pipelines.
