Impact of silane coupling agent treatment on PE surface bonding property

  • The silane coupling agent KH550 is used to pre-treat polyethylene (PE) surface so as to prepare epoxy coating. Its bonding property is compared with those of the PE surface treated using other conventional treatments (e.g. sand papergrinding, sand blasting, and flame polarization). The results indicate that the bonding strength of PE treated using KH550 is80%, 66% and 43% higher than that of grinding, sand blasting and flame polarization, respectively, the best bonding resultis obtained when KH550's mass fraction is 5%~10% and hydrolysis time is 48 h, after soaking for 20 d in 60 ℃ hot water, the bonding strength between PE and epoxy treated using silane coupling agent KH550 still remains at 5 MPa and the failurestate is epoxy cohesion, whereas the water resistance is better than that achieved using traditional treatments.
