Key performance indicators of welded pipe for natural gas pipeline with design factor of 0.8

  • Base metal and weld toughness indicator of welded pipe for natural gas pipeline meeting fracture control requirements under the design factor of 0.8 is studied and feasibility of 100% SMYS hydrostatic test for steel pipe is assessed. For the natural gas pipeline with the design factor of 0.8, diameter of 1 219 mm and design pressure of 12 MPa, it is required to reach 80 J of minimum Charpy impact toughness for welding seam to prevent crack initiation. In order to meet pipeline crack arrest requirements, it is required to reach 260 J of minimum Charpy impact toughness for steel. As shown from statistical analysis and assessment results of yield strength data for 1 219 mm X80 steel pipe in mass production, 100% SMYS factory hydrostatic test of X80 steel pipe is feasible, but it is required to select the supplier with stable performance of plate and steel pipe and strictly detect geometric dimensions of steel pipe after the hydrostatic test.
