Ice plug control and emergency treatment for long-distance gas pipeline

  • With the commissioning of the 2nd West-to-East Gas Pipeline, ice plug problems in the trunk line and offtake stations become increasingly prominent. Effective measures in preventing the ice plug and emergency response measures are in urgent need in the Pipeline Company. The engineering practices indicate that the best method to control the ice plug is to heat the gas in the front end of pressure regulating skids or by electric heating belts in the pipe sections vulnerable to ice plug, or keep the flowing temperature of gas or the gas temperature in the back end of the pressure regulating skids above the water dew point of natural gas; other methods also includes gas heating and alcohol injections. The authors consider that hot water pouring and steam heating to the ice plug are the most simple and practical treatment methods for ice plug removal.
