Thinking on Fracture Arrest of Pipeline in West-east Pipeline Project

  • For the West-east pipeline project to be put into construction, the problems in technology first to be solved are the fracture arrest of pipeline. Fractures can be classified into two kinds bearing quite different characteristics, one being brittle and the other being ductile fracture. With the deep study on theory and development of matallurgy industry, the problem in brittle fracture now has been basically solved, while after the transportation pressure and steel grade are increased, the ductile fracture and arrest of pipeline now become a major study field. For the fracture arrest problem, the author emphatically describes the allowable value of defect and critical flaw length and fracture initiation, Rudinger test and Battelle test of fracture arrest and fracture arrest conditions as well as the CVN requirements in purchase standard. According to our actualities in the theoretical and actual study of fracture arrest, several important suggestions in deep studying fracture arrest and the selection of test medium have been presented.
