Abstract: "Famous Pipelines in the World", a book compiled for the purpose of spreading the knowledge on pipeline engineering, covers the following 4 outstanding pipelines which may be rated as pipeline paragons in the world: Alaska Crude Oil Pipeline, Colonial Oil Products Pipeline, Algeria-Italy Gas Pipeline, and Urengoy-Central Region Gas.Pipeline.The whole course for each pipeline project is described from planning to commissioning, and the activities, problems and solutions which occured in every stage are analyzed, so some valuable experiences and lessons can be learned.Thoroughgoing and painstaking preparations are not only the preconditions to improve project predictability and to prevent blind actions, but the foundations on which the effective and correct study, design and construction are built up.Scientific study topics must be focused and conducted in light of pipeline construction and operation.It is an effective practice to perform design with the instruction from pipeline operation company, and to invite relavent experts to deal with various difficult problems.When construction drawings are available, construction shall be carried out by different contractors invited through sectional biddings, and the work for different contractors shall be finished at the same possible time.During construction, quality control and management shall be enhanced, codes and specifications strictly followed.Attention shall be paid to environmental protection.In addition, principles are given for pipeline project evaluation.
