Abstract:
Supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems provide the modern, efficient and effective method of controlling and moni-toring pipeline operatiens. Use of radio links utilizing VHF and UHF frequencies is an economical method to extend pipoline SCADA systems into remote areas, where no other communicatiou facilities exist, to operate block valves and pump stations and to provide mobile radio comnunications for maintenancc crews. This paper provides the desigu criteria for enginoering VHF and UHF propagation paths for SCADA communications, and for mobile radio communications. The method is especially useful when line-of-sight clearance cannot be obtained above the surface of theoarth for the propagation path.
