Abstract:
The oil/gas pipeline abandonment in the US and Canada was investigated through case survey, consulting and questionnaire survey. Then, the practices of both countries in discrimination of oil/gas pipeline abandonment were summarized from multiple aspects, e.g. management concept, reference indicators, decision-making process, regulatory requirements, legislation, and environment management. With reference to these methods of the US and Canada, and considering the current operation of oil/gas pipelines in China, the focus in research for discrimination of oil/gas pipeline abandonment in China is proposed. To be specific, the decision-making mechanism for abandonment discrimination by comprehensive assessment should be established according to the current oil/gas pipeline framework and integrity management level, so as to provide the efficient guidance for pipeline operation companies to make reasonable decision on the abandonment of old oil/gas pipelines.
