Abstract:
Objective With the in-depth implementation of the “Dual Carbon” strategy and the construction of the new energy substance-energy network, pipelines serve as the core national energy transportation infrastructure and an important carrier for the cross-temporal and spatial allocation of multi-energy media including hydrogen, ammonia, alcohol and carbon dioxide, as well as the support for renewable power consumption and closed-loop carbon cycles. Integrity management acts as the core measure to guarantee the safe and reliable operation of pipelines throughout their full life cycle, while the transportation of multi-energy media poses new challenges to pipeline integrity management.
Methods Centered on the full-life-cycle closed-loop management framework of “data collection and integration-high consequence area identification-risk assessment-inspection and monitoring-integrity assessment-risk mitigation, maintenance and repair-performance evaluation”, this paper reviews the development history and standardization achievements of oil and gas pipeline integrity management at home and abroad, systematically elaborates the research progress and technological breakthroughs of each core technical module, and emphatically analyzes the development status and existing industrial pain points of integrity management for new multi-media energy pipelines.
Results On the basis of the above review and analysis, this paper summarizes the key technical bottlenecks existing in the integrity management of multi-media energy pipelines in China at present, including incomplete dedicated standard systems for multi-medium pipeline integrity management, insufficient basic data on medium-material coupled failure, failure to consider differentiated hazard characteristics of various media in high-consequence-area identification and risk assessment, poor medium compatibility of inspection and monitoring equipment together with inadequate capability for micro-defect identification, the lack of corrections for medium-induced material degradation in integrity assessment, and insufficient technical means for repair, operation-maintenance and risk control under multi-medium service conditions. Targeted priority development directions of pipeline integrity management technologies adapted to the development of substance-energy network are proposed, namely developing dynamic high-consequence-area identification technology for multi-medium scenarios, establishing a multi-field coupled quantitative risk assessment system, retrofitting and upgrading medium-resistant inspection and monitoring equipment as well as building a digital-twin early-warning platform, formulating full-life-cycle integrity assessment methods for multi-medium pipelines, developing risk-mitigation, repair and maintenance technologies compatible with multi-medium operating conditions, and collaboratively promoting the development and implementation of three-level standard systems.
Conclusion The existing integrity management system oriented to traditional oil and gas pipelines cannot fully meet the safety control requirements of multi-media energy pipelines under the substance-energy network. A series of core key technologies need to be tackled intensively, and a complete set of integrity management technologies and standard systems applicable to new energy pipelines carrying hydrogen, ammonia, alcohol and carbon dioxide should be established, so as to provide theoretical support and practical reference for technological innovation and engineering application of integrity management of multi-media energy pipelines under the background of substance-energy network.
